Dr. Srikala Bharath

Dr. Srikala Bharath is a renowned Adult & Old Age Psychiatrist with 40 years of clinical experience in Psychiatry. She completed MBBS from Madras University, DPM & MD from NIMHANS, Bengaluru, DCAP from the University of London, FRCPsych in UK and RANCP in Australia & New Zealand.

After completing DPM, MD and Senior Residency at the Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore she joined as a faculty in 1993 and consultant and took voluntary retirement in May 2016. She worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in UK (2004) and Australia (2016 onwards). She was adjunct faculty at the Rural University of Monash, Mildura (2017 – 2018) and Deakin University, Geelong (2021/2022), Australia while working in permanent positions. She currently works as consultant in the area of Adult and Old Age Psychiatry.

  • I am a Reviewer on a regular basis for national and international journals and review articles in relation to cognitive deficits and psychiatric morbidity in the elderly and mental health promotion and well being in the adolescents and youth.

 

CURRENT PROJECT:

  1. Established a Foundation STEPSSkills To EmPowerSelf – a Not for Profit Foundation carry out the following.
  2. Training of Life Skills Education towards Psychosocial Competence over the Life Span.
  3. Training of Master Trainers and Life Skills Educators towards Psychosocial Competence in Adolescence and Youth – since I have developed the Model of the above, I train extensively focusing on adolescents / youth.
  4. Working with organizations at the grass root level to train vocational skills for selected women with mental illnesses in the community towards economical independence.

 

  • Chevening Scholarship of British Council awardee – 1991.
  • Leadership – restarted Geriatric Clinic in 1999 at NIMHANS along with Dr. Varghese – built it up the clientele, training of residents and other trainees, led research in the area of dementia, old age depression and psychosis.
  • Developed a Model of Training of Facilitators in Promotion of Life Skills (Psychosocial Competence) in adolescents and youth and used it in secondary schools with teachers trained as facilitators – 2000.
  • Involved in research in areas of Old Age Mental Health and Mental Health Promotion using Life Skills.
